So about Robotnik/Eggman's last name...

Well I know that the main villain in the series is named Eggman in Japanese and anything English made after Adventure, and Robotnik in the older English dubs. But if the Robotnik name is an American concept only, then how do you explain Gerald and Maria's last name being Robotnik? This has been haunting me...

Because Robotnik is Eggman's real name. Sonic and Co. call him Eggman because of his egg shape appearance. It just grew from there and he uses Eggman as a nickname.

In the comic that came with the original game, it, if memory serves me correctly, was stated that Eggman was originally a benign and kind-spirited man named Ovi Kintobor, and he was using a device called the ROCC to try to eliminate all of the evil in the world. However, he did not have the gray chaos emerald needed to stabilize the energy from the other 6. Naturally, while holding a hard-boiled egg, he spilled some soda on the control panel (FFFFFUUUUUUU-) and was electrocuted. Between the energy from the emeralds and the electricity, he was transformed to his in-game form.

......What? XD Seriously?

If my memory serves me correctly, yes. I know that origin story was introduced SOMEWHERE down the line.

And I think I always referred to him as Robotnik because of the 90's shows and Sonic 2, until I got Heroes where they called him Eggman. Then I didn't start calling him Robotnik again for a LONG time

I HIGHLY recommend it, it's really addictive! I got it from the library to give it a try and I loved it, so I'm buying the game!

I have the 3DS version, which, despite the fact that Sonic only uses his Super Transformation during the REAL final boss, is still fairly fun.

In the Wii version, you can't use Super Sonic for the final boss. I like the Wii better than the DS. It doesn't make much sense having all the characters there. It worked well with just Sonic, Tails, and Eggman.

Need I say more? Doctors are called by the last name. They made it his last name and call him Eggman AS A DISRESPECT to the Doc.
